Feminist Field Trip

This Saturday come join the Feminist Book Club on a unique field trip to the Art Gallery of Calgary and the Glenbow Museum to view and discuss the exhibitions If Women Ruled the World, and War Brides: One-Way Passage. Through this opportunity we hope to provide an educational basis for the understanding of feminism and feminist art. We encourage you to take part in our tour through our open group critical discussions or on your own leisure. Please feel free to bring your friends/family!

We’ll meet at 11:00 a.m. in the front of the Art Gallery of Calgary, where we will spend approximately an hour of time looking and discussing the works of Judy Chicago. Admission for the Art Gallery of Calgary is $2.50 for students, and the Glenbow Museum is free for ACAD students. We’ll meet again at 12:15 at the Glenbow Museum entrance for the War Brides exhibit.

We hope to see you there!

Change of Plans

So we've decided to push the Female Chauvinist Pigs reading discussion 'til next week. We're going to meet next Thursday the 19th at 5:30 p.m. in the Arthole of ACAD. This way, everyone has more time to read the three chapters, and we can meet and have a drink!

We'll be the ones on the comfy seats with the Feminist Book Club sign.
Don't be shy!

Love,

Kelly Jack

The FBC Makes a Zine Call for Submissions

Hello Everyone,

As most of you already know the FBC is creating a Zine to be sold at the Show and Sale this semester. The topic for this issue is loosely based around the idea for a feminist starter kit, with an anything goes as long as it pertains to feminism type attitude.

There are two ways you can submit to be involved:

· I am looking for articles half a page to a page in lengths; they can be about anything and written in any style. Images are encouraged.

· Also, if you have any ‘best of’s’ for feminist music, movies, literature, art or whatever I would love to take that list off your hands to include in a feature for the zine.

If you are able to submit for either an article or some best of’s send me an email to dana.buzzee@acad.ca with the submission by Sunday November 15!

Female Chauvinist Pigs

Hello everyone!

The Feminist Book Club wants you to take part in our two-part reading discussion
of Ariel Levy’s book, "Female Chauvinist Pigs: Women and the Rise of Raunch
Culture"

The book explores common contemporary perceptions of an “empowered woman”
embracing raunch culture. If male chauvinist pigs of years past thought of
women as pieces of meat, female chauvinist pigs of today are doing them one
better, making sex objects of other women – and themselves. "Female Chauvinist
Pigs" makes the case that the rise of raunch does not represent how far women
have come; it only proves how far they have left to go.

The first reading discussion will take place on Thursday, November 12th at
6:00 pm in Annex C of ACAD (near the library). The book is available through the
Calgary Public Library and at various Chapters locations for $16.00. Please try
and have the first three chapters read for the meeting!

Part two of the reading discussion will be held on Wednesday, December 9th at
12:30, again in Annex C of ACAD.

Everyone is welcome to attend! (Even if you're behind in your readings)
So I hope you’ll come join us!

Some More Feminist Podcasts

What can I say; I am a bit of a nerd. And I really like to listen to podcasts when I make art. So I thought I might share a few more of the gems I have recently found:

The first one is on CFUV (U of Victoria’s radio station). It’s called Women on Air, the website is http://cfuv.uvic.ca/women/index.html and if you search women on air in iTunes you will find the feed.

The second one is Fully Engaged Feminist and can also be found by a quick iTunes search.

The Third one is Bitch radio. I know I wrote a post about bitch before, but I didn’t mention the podcasts, which are also really good. You can find the feed by searching “Bitch Media” in iTunes.

Enjoy!
